As service providers, it can be really easy to get stuck in the mud of offering too many services.
We look at what this competitor is doing… and that competitor… and over time we hodge-podge our services together for no good reason other than that’s what it feels like we’re “supposed” to do. More is better, right?
Actually, it’s not.
What happens when there’s not a good rhyme or reason for each of our services (just adding more and more because it seems like a good thing to do), is our resources run thin because we’re so spread out across so many different options and offerings.
So we put in more hours and find ourselves busier than ever (while likely not making more money commensurate with our time). Then the burn-out factor becomes real! We wonder why we started a biz in the first place and realize that going back to our former 9-5 is far easier (which is crazy, because remember when you couldn’t WAIT to ditch that 9-5?!)
What if there was an easier way? What if you could streamline your services and make your business more SIMPLE and fulfilling?
What if you had a vision for your business that was so solid that it helped drive every decision you make (rather than the blind leading the blind and just doing what your competitors are doing without evaluating it against YOUR goals and vision?)
What if you could streamline your services into an unapologetic, simple offering of THE THING you’re most passionate about?
What would that look like? What would that FEEL like to not be so spread thin, doing a bunch of things only sort of well rather than one thing REALLY well? What would your day look like? How much expertise at that ONE THING could you gain so you could become confident – REALLY confident – in yourself and your business?
I’m telling you, I used to offer “all the things” in my business. The laundry list of services that “all the other designers” were offering because I was supposed to (right?!)… Wrong. I didn’t like doing half of those things and true freedom came to my biz when I said FORGET THAT and stopped offering all the things. Contrary to popular belief, that’s also when I started making more money, not less.
I streamlined my services into offering ONE THING. I got a mentor. I upped my education. I elevated my process so that I could elevate my client’s experience when they work with me. I got REALLY GOOD at one thing so I could let 95% of my other services go.
Now I’m able to serve my clients from a true place of expertise and THEY get to benefit from our time together with a thriving business that actually makes them money, brings them joy, AND impacts those around them.
So how is it done? How do you choose the one service you want to focus on?
Well this is an approach my mentor shared with me, and I’m telling you, it’s genius.
To gain clarity and focus when choosing what service you want to provide, ask yourself this: What do I want to be known for?
Think about it. You want the right clients coming to you for the right reasons. What do most people do before hiring you? They read reviews. They look at how many stars you have on fb or google. They see what past clients have to say about you.
Filter your service offering through the lenses of What kind of testimonials do I want to receive? Most of what you’re currently offering likely doesn’t lead to THE testimonial you want your clients to give you.
So what you need to do is start at the end and work backwards.
You carefully consider what you want to be known for – What the PERFECT glowing testimonial would say – and you offer the service that will get you there.
Not only that, but you take it all a step further by continuing to work backwards… Reverse-engineer the service you’ve chosen. Think through the ENTIRE process and customer journey as you provide that service for your client. Think through every bit of their experience with you – from the beginning to the end – so they will arrive at the end of it all and their testimonial of working with you is EXACTLY what you planned… Exactly what you want to be known for.
It’s a win-win. Asking this question, What do I want to be known for? helps YOU to zoom in on what you’re passionate about, it helps you to anticipate how you’ll serve your client, it gives them exactly what they came to you for, and in the end it adds to your social proof that you really are the real deal.
THIS is how you get off the crazy train of offering too many completely random, unfocused, unstrategic services, and instead find your personal niche of expertise. Your stress levels will drop, your impact in the world will increase, your profits will go up, and your joy will skyrocket.
